Sakat Chauth 2026: Vrat Katha, Puja Vidhi & Shubh Muhurat for Children's Well-Being.
Sakat Chauth 2026: Significance, Vrat Katha, Puja Vidhi, and Shubh Muhurat.

Sakat Chauth, observed on January 6, 2026, marks a sacred Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, and Goddess Sakat (or Sankat Mata), the protector of children.

Known regionally as Sankashti Chaturthi, Til Kuta Chauth, Maghi Chauth, or Vakratunda Chaturthi, this day falls on the Chaturthi Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Magh.
Primarily celebrated in northern India, mothers observe a strict fast—often nirjala (without water)—praying for their children's longevity, health, safety, prosperity, and bright future. Devotees believe that sincere observance removes life's obstacles, crises, and negative influences, inviting divine protection and harmony.
This year holds special significance as it coincides with Angarika Sankashti Chaturthi (Tuesday), amplifying blessings. In Maharashtra and southern regions, it is celebrated as Lambodara Sankashti Chaturthi.

Sakat Chauth Vrat Katha: The Sacred Story.

The heart of Sakat Chauth lies in its poignant Vrat Katha, recited during puja to invoke blessings. Multiple legends exist, but the most popular one illustrates Goddess Sakat's compassion:

In ancient times, a king ordered a massive earthen pot kiln for his city. To ensure success, the potter sacrificed one child daily into the fire. This continued until an elderly woman's turn arrived—she had only one son, her sole support in old age.

The sacrifice day coincided with Sakat Chauth. Devastated but devout, the old woman worshipped Goddess Sakat fervently, praying for her son's life. She sent him to the kiln as ordered.

Miraculously, the next morning, the potter found the boy alive and unharmed—along with all previously sacrificed children revived! Goddess Sakat's grace protected them.

The kingdom hailed her compassionate power. Since then, mothers observe Sakat Chauth, reciting this katha for their children's protection.

Another variant involves Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati playing dice, judged by a clay boy animated by Parvati. When he mistakenly favors Shiva, an angered Parvati curses him with lameness. She advises remedy through Sankashti fasting and Ganesha worship, which heals him.

A third story features a childless merchant couple who, inspired by neighbors, observe the vrat and are blessed with a son.

These tales emphasize maternal devotion, faith in divine protection, and Lord Ganesha's role in obstacle removal.
