After being reduced to 51/4, India recovered brilliantly to post 175/6 in 20 overs, with Hardik Pandya delivering a stunning unbeaten 59 off 28 balls. The all-rounder's late assault completely changed the momentum of the innings.
South Africa's chase then unravelled spectacularly. India's bowlers ripped through the Proteas batting line-up, dismissing them for just 74 in 12.3 overs.
The result gave India a commanding start to the series, while South Africa were left searching for answers ahead of the second T20I.
India Innings: Hardik Pandya Rescues India from 51/4
South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first, with the conditions appearing favourable for the seamers.
India struggled early. Shubman Gill departed for 8, while Sanju Samson scored 19 before falling. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Suryakumar Yadav also failed to build substantial innings, leaving India in trouble at 51/4.
Tilak Varma and Axar Patel then stabilised the innings. The pair added a valuable partnership, rotating the strike and punishing loose deliveries.
