Gilkes 76, Shadab four-for lead Thunder to first win.

Gilkes 76, Shadab four-for lead Thunder to first win.

Gilkes' Masterclass and Shadab's Magic Seal Thunder's First Victory

Sydney Thunder 193/4 (Gilkes 76, Konstas 63) beat Brisbane Heat 159/6 (Renshaw 43, Weibgen 30, Shadab 4-24) by 34 runs.

In a thrilling encounter at Manuka Oval in Canberra on December 22, 2025, the Sydney Thunder finally broke their duck in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 season, registering a comprehensive 34-run victory over the Brisbane Heat.
Matthew Gilkes' elegant 76 and a solid half-century from young gun Sam Konstas powered the Thunder to a challenging 193/4 after being asked to bat first. In response, the Heat, buoyed by their record-breaking chase in the previous game, faltered under pressure from Shadab Khan's devastating leg-spin, managing only 159/6 despite Matt Renshaw's fighting 43.

The win lifts the Thunder off the bottom of the table, giving them their first points after two consecutive losses to start the campaign. For the Heat, coming off a historic high of chasing 258 against the Perth Scorchers, this defeat serves as a reality check, highlighting vulnerabilities away from home.

Toss and Team News

Brisbane Heat captain Xavier Bartlett won the bat flip and elected to bowl first, hoping to exploit any early moisture on the Manuka Oval pitch under lights. The decision seemed strategic given the Heat's explosive batting form, but it backfired as the Thunder openers capitalized on the fielding restriction overs.

Sydney Thunder lined up with: Matthew Gilkes, Sam Konstas, David Warner (c), Cameron Bancroft, Sam Billings (wk), Shadab Khan, Daniel Sams, Chris Green, Nathan McAndrew, Tanveer Sangha, Reece Topley.

Brisbane Heat fielded: Colin Munro, Jack Wildermuth, Matt Renshaw, Hugh Weibgen, Tom Alsop, Max Bryant, Jimmy Peirson (wk), Xavier Bartlett (c), Shaheen Shah Afridi, Liam Haskett, Matthew Kuhnemann.

Notable inclusions saw Jack Wildermuth continuing his fairy-tale return, while Shaheen Shah Afridi aimed to bounce back from a tough start to his BBL career.

Thunder Innings: Openers Lay the Foundation

The Thunder got off to a flyer, with openers Gilkes and Konstas putting on a commanding 127-run partnership – the highest opening stand of the season so far. They negotiated the powerplay superbly, reaching 37/0 despite Bartlett deploying spinner Matthew Kuhnemann early to stifle the scoring.

Konstas, the 19-year-old sensation, was particularly crisp on the off-side, driving elegantly and even unfurling a successful reverse sweep after an earlier mishap. His 45-ball 63 included eight boundaries, showcasing maturity beyond his years. Gilkes, on the other hand, played with freedom, mixing cautious rotation with aerial shots, striking four fours and three sixes in his 48-ball 76.

The partnership was broken in the 14th over when Konstas holed out to Jack Wildermuth, who proved the most effective bowler for the Heat with figures of 2-25. David Warner, batting at No. 4 for the second consecutive game, managed only 7 before falling, but Sam Billings injected late momentum with a quickfire 25 off 11 balls, including two sixes off a flustered Shaheen Afridi in the Power Surge.

Shaheen, entering the game with poor figures of 1-92 from previous outings, showed improvement with sizzling yorkers but went for 35 in his four overs, claiming Gilkes' wicket with a toe-crusher that was upheld on review. Wildermuth and Kuhnemann chipped in with wickets, but the Thunder's disciplined batting ensured a competitive total of 193/4 – a score that proved just beyond the Heat's reach on a slowing pitch.

Heat Chase: Shadab Steals the Show

Chasing 194, the Heat needed their top order to fire, especially after their heroics in the previous match. However, Nathan McAndrew set the tone early with a maiden over in the powerplay, and Wildermuth struggled against the pace.

The game turned dramatically in the fifth over when Shadab Khan was introduced. The Pakistani leg-spinner struck twice in quick succession, removing Colin Munro (18) and Jack Wildermuth (14), reducing the Heat to 38/2. Shadab's variations, particularly his googlies, exploited the turning track perfectly.

Matt Renshaw, fresh off a century against the Scorchers, looked in sublime touch, racing to 43 off 28 balls with fluent strokes, including a slog-sweep six off Chris Green. Partnering with Hugh Weibgen (30), he raised hopes with a 70-run stand, taking the Heat to 108/2. But Shadab returned to have the last laugh, bowling Renshaw with a vicious wrong'un that crashed into middle stump during an attempted reverse sweep.

The middle order crumbled thereafter. Daniel Sams dismissed Weibgen, who lapped a sweep onto his stumps, and Shadab claimed Tom Alsop stumped with another googly. Max Bryant (25) and Jimmy Peirson (11*) provided late resistance, but the required rate ballooned, and the Heat finished well short at 159/6.

Shadab's 4-24 from four overs was the standout performance, earning him the Cricinfo MVP with 95.54 impact points. His spell of all googlies dismantled the Heat's momentum, preventing a repeat of their record chase.

Key Performances and Turning Points
Matthew Gilkes (Player of the Match): His 76 anchored the innings and set the platform. Gilkes' ability to accelerate aerially was crucial on a pitch that kept low later.

Sam Konstas: The young opener's 63 complemented Gilkes perfectly, with sharp running and precise placement minimizing dots.

Shadab Khan: The chief destroyer with the ball, his four-for stifled the chase in the middle overs.

Matt Renshaw: The lone fighter for Heat, but his dismissal was the killer blow.
Jack Wildermuth: Took 2-25 but couldn't replicate his batting heroics.

The pitch at Manuka Oval assisted spin as the game progressed, with the ball gripping and staying low – conditions that favored the Thunder's attack featuring Shadab, Tanveer Sangha, and Chris Green.

Post-Match Reactions and Implications

Gilkes, named Player of the Match, credited the opening partnership: "Konstas and I focused on running hard and picking gaps early. The wicket slowed down, so building that stand was key."

Shadab, beaming after his best BBL figures, said: "The pitch helped with turn, and the googlies worked well. Happy to contribute to the team's first win."

For the Heat, captain Bartlett admitted: "We thought bowling first was the right call, but credit to their openers. We lost too many wickets in clusters."

This victory breathes life into the Thunder's campaign, moving them to a 1-2 record alongside several teams. The Heat slip to 1-2, exposing road woes – they've now lost four consecutive away games.

The BBL action continues thick and fast, with both teams looking to build momentum in a tightly contested season.
