FC Goa 1-2 Istiklol: Gaurs End AFC Campaign with Sixth Straight Loss.

FC Goa vs FC Istiklol Highlights, AFC Champions League Two: FCG 1-2 IST; Gaurs End Campaign With Six Straight Losses.

On Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025, FC Goa bid a disappointing farewell to their maiden AFC Champions League Two campaign, suffering a 2-1 defeat to Tajikistan's FC Istiklol at the iconic Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (Fatorda) in Margao.
The Gaurs, already eliminated, finished the group stage winless with zero points from six matches—the only team in the competition to do so. Despite taking an early lead through Dejan Dražić, defensive errors in the second half allowed Istiklol to stage a comeback and secure the three points.

In a poignant moment at kickoff, FC Goa players briefly paused play as a symbolic gesture to highlight the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League (ISL), amid stalled negotiations over the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) between the AIFF and former organizers FSDL. The club clarified that the action was not directed at opponents, the AFC, or the tournament itself.

Match Summary: Early Promise Fades into Familiar Defeat

FC Goa started brightly in front of their home fans, desperate for a consolation win to end a torrid continental run. Missing several key players due to injuries, suspensions, and departures, coach Manolo Márquez fielded a resilient side that showed intent from the outset.

8' - Dejan Dražić (1-0): The Serbian forward broke the deadlock with a clinical right-footed strike, latching onto a precise through ball and slotting past goalkeeper Nikola Stošić. It was Goa's first lead in the competition this season, sparking hope among the Fatorda faithful.

Istiklol responded aggressively, with Amirbek Juraboev testing Lara Sharma from distance and Siavash Haghnazari hitting the bar shortly after. Goa nearly doubled their advantage when Iker Guarrotxena forced a fine save from Stošić.

The first half ended with the Gaurs in control, but the second half told a different story.

53' - Paul Komolafe (1-1): A costly error from midfielder Harsh Patre—a poor backpass—allowed Komolafe to intercept, round Sharma, and coolly equalize.
56' - Amirbek Juraboev (penalty, 1-2): Just three minutes later, defender Pol Moreno handled the ball in the box, conceding a penalty. Juraboev stepped up and converted confidently, completing a rapid turnaround.

Late drama ensued when Istiklol's Sodikdzhon Kurbonov received a red card, reducing the visitors to 10 men. Goa threw everything forward, with substitutes like Brison Fernandes creating chances, but efforts from Guarrotxena and others went astray. Istiklol held firm despite the numerical disadvantage.

Key Performances and Player Ratings

Dejan Dražić was the standout for Goa, earning high marks for his goal and constant threat. Youngster Mohammad Nemil also impressed with his energy on the wing. Boris Singh provided width, while Lara Sharma made several crucial saves.

On the downside, Harsh Patre's error proved pivotal, and the defense, including Pol Moreno, struggled with concentration lapses.

For Istiklol, Paul Komolafe and Amirbek Juraboev were clinical, while goalkeeper Stošić's saves kept them in the game early on.

Despite the win, Istiklol also bowed out, finishing third on nine points—level with Al Zawraa but eliminated on inferior goal difference.

Group D Final Standings and Implications

Al Nassr dominated Group D with a perfect 18 points, scoring heavily en route to the knockouts. Al Zawraa sneaked into second place, advancing despite a heavy loss elsewhere on the same day.

FC Goa's campaign highlighted the gap between Indian clubs and Asian counterparts, with defensive fragility and lack of clinical finishing costing dearly across six games.

This Christmas Eve clash at Fatorda provided moments of pride amid disappointment—a microcosm of FC Goa's resilient but ultimately fruitless Asian adventure.
