Burnley 0-2 Chelsea: Neto and Fernandez Strike as Blues Climb to Second.

Report as Chelsea win 2-0 at Turf Moor to leapfrog Manchester City into second place in the Premier League; Pedro Neto’s first-half header and Enzo Fernandez’s late tap-in seal a third consecutive league victory for Enzo Maresca’s side; Burnley remain rooted in the bottom three after a third straight defeat.
Turf Moor, November 23, 2025 – Chelsea continued their surge up the Premier League table with a composed, if not spectacular, 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Burnley, moving to within three points of leaders Arsenal. Pedro Neto’s 37th-minute header – a moment of genuine class on an otherwise blustery Lancashire afternoon – broke the deadlock, before Enzo Fernandez applied the finishing touch in the 88th minute to secure all three points and extend the Blues’ unbeaten run in the league to eight matches.

Enzo Maresca, rotating shrewdly ahead of a pivotal week that sees Chelsea host Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday and then welcome Arsenal to Stamford Bridge next Sunday, rested the influential Moisés Caicedo entirely and still watched his side dominate possession (68%) and restrict Burnley to just two shots on target all afternoon. The result lifts Chelsea above Manchester City into second place on 32 points from 15 games, while Scott Parker’s Burnley stay 18th with only nine points and a goal difference of -19.

First Half: Neto’s Quality Unlocks Stubborn Clarets

Chelsea began with the confidence of a side that had won their previous two league outings 4-1 (against West Ham) and 3-0 (at Southampton). Andrey Santos, handed a rare Premier League start in Caicedo’s absence, dictated tempo from deep alongside Fernandez, while the attacking quartet of Jamie Gittens, João Pedro, Pedro Neto and Liam Delap buzzed with intent.

Burnley, forced into a defensive 4-5-1 without the suspended Lyle Foster for the first half, sat deep and looked to frustrate. Their plan worked for 37 minutes. Delap headed a Gittens cross straight at Martin Dúbravka, João Pedro dragged a shot wide after neat interplay with Reece James, and Santos saw a 25-yard piledriver deflect inches past the post.

The breakthrough, when it arrived, was worth the wait. Gittens, the 20-year-old former Borussia Dortmund winger who has been one of the signings of the season, collected the ball on the left touchline, looked up and delivered an exquisite out-swinging cross to the far post. Pedro Neto, timing his run perfectly between Axel Tuanzebe and Joe Walker, rose highest and directed a pinpoint header back across Dúbravka and into the far corner. 1-0 Chelsea, and Turf Moor fell silent.

Burnley’s only moment of first-half controversy came in the 42nd minute. Robert Sánchez rolled the ball out to Trevoh Chalobah for a goal-kick, but Chalobah inexplicably placed his hand on the ball before picking it up. Home players and fans screamed for a penalty – remembering the infamous 2021 incident when Newcastle were awarded a spot-kick in similar circumstances – but referee Peter Bankes ruled that Sánchez had not yet taken the kick and was simply handing the ball to Chalobah. No penalty, no VAR intervention. Scott Parker was apoplectic on the touchline.

Second Half: Chelsea Control, Burnley Toothless

Parker threw on Armando Broja and Hannibal Mejbri at the interval, switching to 4-4-2 in search of an equaliser. For a brief spell it worked: Zian Flemming, playing as a second striker, volleyed Burnley’s best chance of the game high over the bar from 12 yards in the 69th minute after good work down the right by Luca Tchaouna.

That was as close as the Clarets came. Chelsea, with Malo Gusto and Marc Guiu introduced after the hour, simply turned the screw. Santos was imperious, winning seven duels and completing 92% of his passes, while Fernandez began to find pockets of space between the lines.

The killer second goal arrived in the 88th minute and owed everything to teenage substitute Marc Guiu. The 19-year-old Spaniard, on for Liam Delap, collected a pass on the right touchline, jinked inside Josh Cullen with outrageous close control and slid a perfect low ball across the six-yard box. Enzo Fernandez, arriving late as he so often does, smashed home from three yards to spark wild celebrations in the away end.

What It Means

Chelsea (2nd, 32 pts) are now firmly in the title conversation. Victory over Barcelona midweek would send out a huge statement ahead of next Sunday’s mouth-watering clash with Arsenal, live on Sky Sports. Maresca’s side have scored 31 league goals already this season – only Arsenal (34) have more.

Burnley (18th, 9 pts) are three points from safety and have scored just eight goals in 15 games. Parker faces a huge Lancashire derby against Blackburn next Saturday knowing another defeat could leave them cut adrift before Christmas.

Post-Match Reaction

Enzo Maresca: “Very happy with the three points and the clean sheet. We knew it would be difficult here – Burnley fight for every ball. Andrey (Santos) was magnificent; he showed why we trust him completely. We rested Moisés because Tuesday and next Sunday are enormous games. The squad depth is improving every week.”

Scott Parker: “We’re disappointed because for large parts we frustrated them. The penalty incident in the first half is a joke – everyone in the stadium saw it. But we can’t keep feeling sorry for ourselves. We have to start turning these tight games into points, because right now we’re not clinical enough at either end.”

Chelsea march on. Burnley’s fight for survival goes on.
