Nwaneri & Saka Seal It: Arsenal Teens Down Brighton 2-0.

Carabao Cup Fourth Round: Arsenal 2-0 Brighton – Nwaneri & Saka Send Gunners Through.

Emirates Stadium, Wednesday 29 October 2025 Attendance: 60,123 By Charles Watts, Goal.

Preamble: A Night for the Kids

The Emirates was buzzing before kick-off, and not just for the usual reasons. Max Dowman, 15 years and 10 months old, trotted out in Arsenal red – the youngest starter in the club’s 139-year history.
Hale End’s latest prodigy. A boy among men. Mikel Arteta had made 10 changes from the side that dismantled Crystal Palace 4-0 on Sunday. Only Eberechi Eze remained. This was rotation on steroids. A gamble. A statement: We trust the kids.

Brighton, under Fabian Hürzeler, arrived with no such luxury. They named a strong side – Georginio Rutter, Stefanos Tzimas, Carlos Baleba – and played like a team that smelled blood. For 57 minutes, they dominated. Kepa Arrizabalaga was a one-man firewall. Arsenal were ragged, toothless, lucky to be level.

Then, Ethan Nwaneri happened. Then, Bukayo Saka happened. Two academy graduates. Two moments of magic. 2-0. Eighth win in a row. Sixth clean sheet. Quarter-finals secured.

This wasn’t just a cup win. It was a coming-out party.
The Teams

First Half: Brighton Dominate, Kepa Saves
2nd Minute – Save! Kepa denies Baleba

Brighton started like a train. Baleba, 21, collected 30 yards out, shifted onto his left, and unleashed. Kepa flew right, tipping over. Warning shot.
8th Minute – Save! Kepa stops Rutter

Rutter, Brighton’s £40m summer signing, burst past Kiwior. One-on-one. Kepa spread himself, blocked with his chest. Arsenal hearts in mouths.

12th Minute – MISS! Tzimas skies it

The big chance.

Arsenal corner. Lewis-Skelly hesitated – stick or twist? – and Brighton broke. Rutter galloped 70 yards, slid in Stefanos Tzimas. Clean through. Only Kepa to beat. The Greek blazed over. A let-off.

20th Minute – Save! Kepa foils Rutter again

Rutter, again. Cut inside White, 25-yard drive. Kepa parried. Brighton were all over Arsenal.

First Half Stats
Shots: Arsenal 0 – Brighton 7
On target: Arsenal 0 – Brighton 4
Possession: Arsenal 58% – Brighton 42%
xG: Arsenal 0.00 – Brighton 1.12

Arsenal’s only “highlight”? A Dowman nutmeg on Veltman. The 15-year-old was electric – darting runs, flicks, fearlessness. The future, in the present.

Half-Time: Arteta’s Fire

Arteta didn’t scream. He didn’t need to. “We’re Arsenal. At home. In the cup. Wake up.”

Brighton’s Hürzeler? Smiling. His side had dominated the league leaders.

Second Half: The Academy Strikes
50th Minute – Save! Kepa punches De Cuyper

Brighton again. De Cuyper, left-back turned winger, cut inside and rifled. Kepa punched clear. Still 0-0.

57th Minute – GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Brighton (Nwaneri)

Then, this.

Merino, stand-in captain, received on the halfway line. A no-look backheel – pure silk – split Van Hecke and Dunk. Lewis-Skelly overlapped, fizzed a low cross. Ethan Nwaneri, ghosting into the box, side-footed home. 1-0.

Steele got fingertips. Didn’t matter. Nwaneri wheeled away, arms cupped to ears. His first goal since April. His statement.

70th Minute – Substitution: Saka ON for Dowman

Dowman’s night ended. Standing ovation. 70 minutes. 12 duels won. 3 key passes. A debut for the ages.

Bukayo Saka entered. The king returns.
73rd Minute – Chance! Merino header blocked

Saka’s first touch? A corner. Merino rose, powered goalward. Steele, somehow, clawed off the line.
76th Minute – GOAL! Arsenal 2-0 Brighton (Saka)

Then, the killer.

Jurrien Timber, on for White, surged from right-back. Into the box. To Andre Annous, 17, making his debut. Shot. Steele saved. Saka, following up, side-footed home. 2-0.

Game over. Emirates erupted.
90+2’ – Chance! Trossard hits post

Leandro Trossard, on for Jesus, danced through, curled against the post. Could’ve been three.

Full Time: Arsenal 2-0 Brighton

Post-Match Reaction

Mikel Arteta:

“Max Dowman? 15 years old. Starting at the Emirates. Composed. Brave. This is Hale End. Ethan reminded everyone what he’s about. Kepa? Outstanding. We weren’t great first half, but we found a way. Eighth win. Clean sheet. Quarter-finals. Perfect.”

Fabian Hürzeler (Brighton):

“We dominated for 57 minutes. Created big chances. But football punishes you. One backheel, one cross – game over. Arsenal’s quality in transitions won it. We go again.”

Ethan Nwaneri:

“Been waiting for that goal. The backheel from Mikel? Unreal. I just had to finish. This is why we train every day.”

Max Dowman (15):

“Dream come true. The fans singing my name? I’ll never forget it. Just want to keep learning.”
