Carabao Cup Last 16: Wolves 3-4 Chelsea – Blues Survive Molineux Mayhem.

Molineux Stadium, Wednesday 29 October 2025 Attendance: 28,147 By Mike McGrath, The Telegraph.

Preamble: From Mutiny to Miracle (Almost)

Molineux was a cauldron of rage. Bottom of the Premier League. Winless in nine. A 3-0 deficit after 41 minutes. Chants of “We want Fosun out” and “You’re getting sacked in the morning” rained down on Vitor Pereira and the Chinese ownership. The Carabao Cup, usually a distraction, had become a referendum on Wolves’ very existence.
Then, in the second half, something stirred. A goal within 30 seconds of the restart. A volley. A lob. A red card. A screamer. Six minutes of stoppage time that felt like an eternity. Chelsea, cruising at 3-0, were clinging on at 4-3. Enzo Maresca threw on £200m of talent to stem the tide. Liam Delap, back after 10 weeks out, lasted 26 minutes before two “stupid” yellows. Jamie Gittens, the 19-year-old winger, scored one and made two. David Møller Wolfe, the Norwegian full-back, scored twice in 18 minutes.

This was not a cup tie. This was a fever dream.

The Teams

Wolves (4-2-3-1): José Sá; Tchatchoua, Agbadou, Toti, Møller Wolfe; João Gomes, Bellegarde; Hwang Hee-Chan (c), Fer López, Rodrigo Gomes; Arokodare. Subs: Bentley (GK), Doherty, Mosquera, Munetsi, Krejčí, Strand Larsen, Forbs.

Chelsea (4-3-3): Filip Jörgensen; James, Disasi, Colwill, Hato; Santos, Lavia, Dewsbury-Hall; Estêvão, George, Gittens. Subs: Sánchez (GK), Cucurella, Caicedo, Fernández, Neto, Mudryk, Delap.

Referee: Andy Madley VAR: Paul Tierney
First Half: Chelsea’s Kids Run Riot
5th Minute – GOAL! Wolves 0-1 Chelsea (Santos)

It started with a gift.

Tolu Arokodare, the towering Nigerian striker, received a simple pass 30 yards from his own goal. Under no pressure, he rolled a backpass straight to Andrey Santos. The Brazilian, on loan from Strasbourg but recalled, took one touch and curled a first-time shot into the bottom corner. His first Chelsea goal. Molineux groaned.

15th Minute – GOAL! Wolves 0-2 Chelsea (George)

Ten minutes later, perfection.

Chelsea’s youngsters played like veterans. Gittens, 19, danced past Tchatchoua on the left. A one-two with Dewsbury-Hall. A low cross. Tyrique George, the 18-year-old academy product, slid in at the back post. 2-0. The away end erupted. The home end turned on Pereira.

19th Minute – Substitution: Doherty OFF, Rodrigo Gomes ON

Pereira acted. Matt Doherty, the experienced right-back, was hooked. Rodrigo Gomes, 20, came on. The message: Youth over experience. The fans booed.

41st Minute – GOAL! Wolves 0-3 Chelsea (Estêvão)

Then, the dagger.

Chelsea won the ball high. Santos to Gittens. Gittens to Estêvão Willian, the £51m Brazilian teenager. One touch. A chip over José Sá from 20 yards. The ball hung, dropped, kissed the underside of the bar. 3-0.

Half-time. Molineux was silent. Pereira walked off to jeers.

Half-Time: Pereira’s Gambles

In the tunnel, Pereira made three changes:
Mosquera → Toti
Munetsi → Bellegarde
Krejčí → Fer López

“We fight,” he told his players. “For the shirt. For the fans. For me.”

Second Half: The Comeback
48th Minute – GOAL! Wolves 1-3 Chelsea (Arokodare)

Kick-off. Hwang Hee-Chan collected on the right, turned, and slid a perfect through-ball. Tolu Arokodare redeemed his earlier error, bursting past Colwill and slotting low past Jörgensen. 1-3. Molineux ignited.

60th Minute – Substitution: Delap ON for George

Maresca, sensing danger, sent on Liam Delap – his first minutes since August. The striker, fresh from injury, was greeted with a roar from the 3,000 travelling Blues.

73rd Minute – GOAL! Wolves 2-3 Chelsea (Møller Wolfe)

The pressure mounted. Yerson Mosquera launched a long throw into the box. Agbadou flicked on. David Møller Wolfe, arriving late at the back post, volleyed first-time into the roof of the net. 2-3.

Molineux was rocking. Pereira punched the air. The comeback was on.

79th–83rd Minute – Maresca’s Panic Subs

Chelsea were unraveling. Maresca threw on the cavalry:
79’ Caicedo → Lavia
81’ Fernández → Dewsbury-Hall
83’ Cucurella → Hato
83’ Neto → Estêvão

Four changes in four minutes. £200m of talent to protect a one-goal lead.

86th Minute – RED CARD: Delap (Chelsea)

Then, chaos.

Delap, frustrated, shoved Mosquera off the ball. Yellow one. Thirty seconds later, he barged into Agbadou. Yellow two. Red. Off after 26 minutes. Maresca fumed on the touchline.

89th Minute – GOAL! Wolves 2-4 Chelsea (Gittens)

From the free-kick, Chelsea broke. Hato to Neto. Neto to Jamie Gittens. The winger took one touch, looked up, and unleashed a 25-yard volley that arrowed into the top corner. 2-4. A goal to settle any tie.

90+1st Minute – GOAL! Wolves 3-4 Chelsea (Møller Wolfe)

But Wolves weren’t done.

Another long throw. Agbadou flicked. Møller Wolfe, now a hero, lobbed Jörgensen from 20 yards with the outside of his boot. 3-4. The stadium exploded.

Six minutes of stoppage time. Hearts in mouths. Chelsea camped in their half. Wolves threw everything forward. A final corner. Cleared. Whistle.

Post-Match Reaction

Vitor Pereira (Wolves):

“We won the second half 3-1. The spirit? Unbelievable. We just need one win. Then everything changes. I take responsibility for the 11 changes, but look what these players did from 3-0 down. The fans saw it. We can stay up.”

Enzo Maresca (Chelsea):

“Six red cards in nine games? Embarrassing. Delap’s were very stupid. We accept some reds, but not these. We were 3-0 up, dominant, then we switch off. We needed Enzo, Caicedo, Neto to survive. This cannot happen.”

Jamie Gittens (Chelsea):

“Crazy game. I just hit it – didn’t think. Happy to help the team. We’re through, that’s all that matters.”
