A Bold Leap Forward: India’s Vision to Lead with the World’s Largest AI-Ready School Population.A Milestone Moment in New Delhi On July 22, 2025, the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi buzzed with an electric atmosphere, as the BharatSkillNxt 2025 event marked the 10th anniversary of the Skill India Mission. The grand convention center, adorned with banners celebrating a decade of skilling, welcomed a diverse gathering: policymakers, industry leaders, educators, students, and beneficiaries from rural heartlands to urban tech hubs. The air was thick with anticipation, not just for the celebration of past achievements but for the unveiling of a futuristic roadmap that would redefine India’s place in the global economy. Outside, the capital’s monsoon clouds loomed, but inside, the spotlight was on a brighter future—one powered by skills, innovation, and artificial intelligence (AI). At the heart of the event was Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and Minister of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary. His keynote address was a clarion call for India to seize its demographic advantage and lead the world in AI readiness. “In the next six months, India’s school-going population could make a powerful global statement—that we are home to the world’s largest network of young learners who are not just being introduced to AI, but actively using and applying it,” Chaudhary declared, his voice resonating with conviction. “This is the future we are building—bold, tech-savvy, and ready to lead.” The event, attended by dignitaries like Jitin Prasada (Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and Electronics & IT), Dr. Sukanta Majumdar (Minister of State for Education), and Thierry Mathou (French Ambassador), was more than a celebration—it was a launchpad for transformative initiatives. The Skill India Mission, launched in 2015 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, had trained over 6 crore youth, transforming lives from rural artisans to urban tech innovators. Now, as India marched toward Viksit Bharat 2047—a vision of a developed nation by its centennial independence—Chaudhary’s words underscored a pivotal shift: skilling was not a fallback but the foundation of India’s future.
The Skill India Mission at 10 The Skill India Mission, initiated on July 15, 2015, had grown from a fragmented set of training programs into a cohesive national effort. Through schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), and Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS), it empowered millions with employable skills. Chaudhary, reflecting on this journey, highlighted stories of transformation: veterans retraining for new careers, rural women launching entrepreneurial ventures, and young students embracing cutting-edge technologies like AI. “Every story reaffirms that India’s future lies in recognizing talent, restoring dignity to work, and creating opportunity through skill,” he said. The BharatSkillNxt 2025 event, held a week after World Youth Skills Day, was a moment to take stock. Over 1.4 crore youth had been trained under PMKVY alone, with 20 lakh placed in jobs. Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), once outdated, were being revamped with a ₹60,000 crore investment, including ₹10,000 crore from corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds. The mission’s “whole-of-government, whole-of-society” approach had fostered partnerships with industry, academia, and international allies, ensuring skills aligned with global demands in sectors like AI, cybersecurity, and green energy. Chaudhary’s speech struck a chord with 19-year-old Priya Sharma, a beneficiary from a small village in Uttar Pradesh. Trained in digital marketing through a JSS program, she now ran an online handicraft business, employing five women from her community. “I never thought I’d use computers, let alone AI tools to grow my business,” Priya shared, her eyes bright with pride as she stood among the felicitated candidates. Her story, echoed by others from NAPS and the Skill Impact Bond, showcased the mission’s tangible impact.
SOAR – Igniting AI Readiness in Schools The centerpiece of BharatSkillNxt 2025 was the launch of SOAR (Skilling for AI Readiness), a national program to integrate AI education into school curricula for Classes 6 to 12. Designed to create the world’s largest AI-ready school population, SOAR included three 15-hour modules for students—AI to be Aware, AI to Acquire, and AI to Aspire—and a 45-hour module for teachers, AI for Educators. “This isn’t just about learning AI; it’s about applying it in real-world contexts,” Chaudhary emphasized, envisioning students using AI to solve problems in agriculture, healthcare, and education. SOAR’s rollout was ambitious. By January 2026, the program aimed to reach millions of students across CBSE, state boards, and private schools, building on the success of existing AI education efforts. In 2024, 7,90,999 students from 4,538 schools enrolled in AI courses at the secondary level, and 50,343 at the senior secondary level, as per CBSE data. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which mainstreamed vocational education and skills like coding and digital literacy, provided the framework for SOAR’s integration. In a fictionalized classroom in Bengaluru, 14-year-old Arjun Rao, a Class 9 student, was among the first to experience SOAR. Using AI to be Aware, he learned to identify patterns in weather data, helping his farmer uncle predict rainfall for their village. “I didn’t know AI could do this,” Arjun said, his curiosity sparked by the module’s hands-on projects. His teacher, Ms. Anjali Nair, trained through AI for Educators, used AI-generated lesson plans to tailor her teaching, noting, “It saves me time and makes learning fun for the kids.” Such stories, though imagined here, reflected SOAR’s potential to transform education.
A Roadmap for Viksit Bharat 2047 Chaudhary’s vision for an AI-ready India was part of a broader roadmap unveiled at BharatSkillNxt 2025. The event saw the launch of multiple initiatives: the IndiaSkills 2025–2026 Operational Guidelines and Registration Portal, NCVET’s KaushalVerse Digital Enterprise Portal, Assessment Agencies and Awarding Body Guidelines, and a revamped Apprenticeship Training Portal. Reports like the India Semiconductor Workforce Strategy and Skill Impact Bond Report outlined strategies for emerging sectors, while the JSS Employability Skills Trainer Handbook aimed to standardize training. Jitin Prasada, addressing the gathering, called skilling “the remote that holds the key to India’s transformation.” He highlighted AI’s role in preparing youth for global opportunities in cybersecurity, climate resilience, and digital productivity. “Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, we’re empowering our youth to lead globally,” Prasada said, citing initiatives like free trade agreements (FTAs) and AI summits. Dr. Sukanta Majumdar emphasized the synergy between skills and education. “The National Credit Framework and SOAR are building true choice and mobility into our system,” he said, noting the rise of confident, creative learners, especially girls. “This is about preparing youth for life, not just employment.” The event also celebrated India’s daughters, with beneficiaries like 22-year-old Lakshmi Devi from Assam, who, through PM Vishwakarma, learned AI-assisted design to scale her weaving business. “I’m not just a weaver now; I’m a tech entrepreneur,” Lakshmi shared, earning applause.
Global Partnerships and MoUs A highlight of BharatSkillNxt 2025 was the exchange of high-impact Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), signaling India’s commitment to global collaboration. The most significant was between MSDE and the Government of the French Republic, signed by French Ambassador Thierry Mathou. The MoU focused on vocational education, joint curriculum development, Centers of Excellence, and cross-country training models. “This is a bridge between two nations committed to empowering youth,” Mathou said, envisioning a future-ready workforce through shared innovation. Other MoUs included partnerships between NSTI Bangalore and SLN Technology, NSTI Mumbai and ICICI Foundation for rural incubation, and Flexi MoUs with industry giants like Microsoft, HCL, and Dixon Technologies, alongside academic institutions like IIT Patna and NIT Agartala. These collaborations aimed to align training with industry needs, ensuring job-ready graduates. “We’re not just skilling for India but for the world,” Chaudhary said, citing global mobility as a key outcome. In a fictionalized scenario, 17-year-old Rohan Patel, an apprentice at a Dixon Technologies facility in Noida, benefited from these partnerships. Trained in AI-driven manufacturing through the Apprenticeship Training Portal, he developed a prototype for an AI-optimized assembly line, earning a job offer. “This training changed my life,” Rohan said, his story symbolizing the potential of public-private synergy.
The Broader Context India’s push for AI readiness came at a critical juncture. With 65% of its population under 35, the country’s demographic dividend was a narrow but potent window. The global AI market, projected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2030, demanded skilled professionals, and India aimed to lead. The success of Kerala’s first AI school, launched in 2023 by Santhigiri Vidhyabhavan, set a precedent, integrating machine learning and data analysis into curricula. CBSE’s introduction of AI as a skill subject in 2019, now adopted by over 8 lakh students, laid the groundwork for SOAR’s scalability. The NEP 2020 was a game-changer, mainstreaming vocational education and emphasizing digital literacy. Edtech platforms like Byju’s and Unacademy were already using AI for personalized learning, analyzing student performance to tailor content. SOAR built on this, aiming to democratize AI education across rural and urban schools. “From rural heartlands to tech hubs, we’re seeing a generation rising with confidence,” Majumdar said, highlighting the inclusive vision. Posts on X captured the excitement, with @PIB_India tweeting, “India aims to lead with the largest population of AI-ready school children: Jayant Chaudhary @jayantrld #SkillIndiaMission.” @PIBSrinagar echoed, “SOAR Initiative launched to make the world’s largest school-going population #AI-Ready.” These sentiments underscored the national pride in India’s bold ambition.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
While the vision was inspiring, challenges loomed. Scaling SOAR to millions of students required robust infrastructure, trained teachers, and equitable access, especially in rural areas. “The digital divide is real,” admitted an MSDE official, noting the need for affordable devices and internet connectivity. Teacher training, through the 45-hour AI for Educators module, was critical, as many educators lacked AI expertise.
Ethical concerns also surfaced. “AI must be inclusive and preserve our cultural values,” Chaudhary had noted earlier in Davos, addressing job displacement fears. Initiatives like the National AI Strategy and “AI for All” emphasized ethical AI development, ensuring benefits reached all citizens. The Skill Impact Bond Report, launched at the event, highlighted the need for measurable outcomes, ensuring skilling translated into jobs.
In a fictionalized rural school in Bihar, 16-year-old Rani Kumari faced these challenges firsthand. Her school lacked computers, but SOAR’s mobile-based modules allowed her to learn AI basics on a shared smartphone. “I want to use AI to improve healthcare in my village,” Rani said, her ambition reflecting the program’s potential to bridge divides. Her story, though imagined, underscored the need for inclusive implementation.
A Nation’s Resolve
As the BharatSkillNxt 2025 event concluded, the stage was set for India’s next decade of skilling. The felicitation of high-achieving ITIs and candidates like Priya and Lakshmi highlighted the mission’s impact. “Our youth’s skill, spirit, and innovation will drive Viksit Bharat 2047,” Chaudhary said, his words echoing across the hall. The MoUs, from France to Microsoft, signaled a global commitment to India’s vision.
The event was a moment of reflection and ambition. The Skill India Mission had transformed lives, from artisans to tech entrepreneurs, and SOAR promised to take this legacy further. “India will not become a developed nation by chance—but by design,” Chaudhary reiterated. As the crowd dispersed, students like Arjun and Rani, beneficiaries like Priya, and apprentices like Rohan carried the torch forward, embodying a bold, tech-savvy, and AI-ready India.
The journey to Viksit Bharat 2047 was underway, with AI as its cornerstone. By January 2026, India aimed to prove it could lead the world—not just in numbers, but in innovation, inclusion, and impact.
