The Sigma BF: A ‘Radically Simple’ 24.6MP Full-Frame Compact Camera.

Sigma has once again pushed the boundaries of camera design with the announcement of the Sigma BF, a compact 24.6-megapixel full-frame interchangeable lens camera. Designed to “evoke the essence of photography,” the BF is a testament to minimalism, featuring a radically simple design with just three buttons, a dial, and a shutter release.

This camera is not just about cutting-edge technology but also about redefining the photography experience by stripping away distractions and focusing on the joy of capturing moments.

A Camera Built for Simplicity and Joy

The Sigma BF is a bold departure from the complex, feature-heavy cameras that dominate the market today. Measuring just 5.1 by 2.9 by 1.4 inches (129.5 by 73.7 by 35.6 millimeters) and weighing a mere 13.7 ounces (388 grams), the BF is designed to be lightweight, portable, and intuitive. Sigma’s goal with the BF is to create a camera that allows photographers to focus solely on the act of taking pictures, free from the clutter of excessive controls and menus.

To achieve this, Sigma has developed a completely new user interface. The live view screen displays only the essential photography-related settings, while secondary settings are tucked away in an optional menu. More detailed settings and management functions are housed in the system menu, ensuring that the photographer’s view remains uncluttered and focused on the subject.

Unibody Design: A First in Camera History

One of the most striking features of the Sigma BF is its unibody design. For the first time in camera history, Sigma has crafted a camera body from a single block of aluminum. This meticulous process takes seven hours and results in a camera that boasts unprecedented rigidity and durability. The unibody construction also ensures that the camera’s weight harmonizes perfectly with any attached lens, providing a balanced and comfortable shooting experience.

Built-In Storage and Connectivity

In line with its minimalist design, the Sigma BF comes with built-in digital storage. The camera is equipped with a 230GB SSD, capable of storing over 14,000 JPEG files, 4,300 uncompressed RAW images, or 2.5 hours of high-quality video. This eliminates the need for external memory cards, further simplifying the user experience.

For transferring files, the BF features a USB-C port, allowing for fast and efficient data transfer to a computer. This seamless integration of storage and connectivity underscores Sigma’s commitment to creating a camera that is as functional as it is elegant.

24.6MP Full-Frame Sensor and Advanced Autofocus

At the heart of the Sigma BF is a 24.6-megapixel full-frame sensor with a native ISO range of 100 to 102,400, expandable down to 6, 12, 25, and 50. This sensor delivers exceptional image quality, with rich detail and vibrant colors, even in challenging lighting conditions.

The BF also features a hybrid autofocus system that combines phase detection and contrast detection. Powered by state-of-the-art algorithms, this system ensures fast and accurate focusing, even in dynamic shooting scenarios. The camera’s subject detection mode can quickly identify and focus on people, dogs, and cats, making it an excellent choice for portrait and pet photography.

6K Video Capabilities and Creative Color Modes

The Sigma BF is not just a stills camera; it is also a powerful tool for videographers. It can capture video at up to 6K resolution in L-Log, with support for H.264 and H.265 codecs. The camera shoots at up to 29.97 frames per second (fps) in 6K and 4K, and up to 119.88 fps in 1080p Full HD, offering filmmakers a versatile range of options for their projects.

For photographers looking to explore their creative side, the BF offers 13 unique color modes:

Standard

Rich

Calm

Powder Blue

Warm Gold

Teal

Orange

FOV Classic Blue

FOV Classic Yellow

Forest Green

Sunset Red

709 Look

Monochrome

These color modes open up new avenues for artistic expression, allowing photographers to achieve their desired look straight out of the camera.

Haptic Feedback and Minimalist Interface

The Sigma BF is the first mirrorless camera to incorporate haptic feedback into its controls. The dial, center button, option button, and playback button all provide accurate and comfortable tactile feedback, enhancing the user experience.

The rear display, with a resolution of approximately 2.1 million dots, is designed to show only the minimum necessary information. Sigma has even included an option to remove all on-screen information, ensuring that nothing stands between the photographer and the image. Active settings are displayed on a secondary status monitor, keeping the live view screen clean and uncluttered.

Pricing and Availability

The Sigma BF will be available in two finishes: black and silver. Both versions are scheduled to ship by April 2025 and will retail for $1,999. This competitive pricing makes the BF an attractive option for photographers seeking a high-quality, full-frame camera with a minimalist design.

Updated I Series Lenses

To complement the BF, Sigma is updating its I Series of compact prime lenses. The L-mount lenses will now be available in silver, perfectly matching the silver finish of the BF. Additionally, the laser engraving on the body and product line badge have been updated for all nine black models in the Sigma I Series for both L-Mount and Sony E-mount lenses.

The 45mm f/2.8 DG lens will also receive an upgrade to support the magnetic metal lens cap. These changes will be reflected in L-mount lenses starting in April and E-mount lenses from May.
