AC Milan's Top-Four Dreams Shattered in Bologna Defeat: Player Ratings & Analysis.

AC Milan’s Top-Four Hopes Dashed After Defeat to Bologna: Player Ratings and Analysis.

AC Milan’s hopes of securing a top-four finish in Serie A took a massive blow as they suffered a disappointing defeat to Bologna at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium. The Rossoneri put in a lacklustre performance, with only a few players managing to rise to the occasion.
Below, we break down the player ratings and analyse where it all went wrong for Milan. If you haven’t already, make sure to check out our guide on how we decide player ratings, from the scale to the factors that influence the scores.

Starting XI: Mixed Performances in a Crucial Game

Mike Maignan (6/10)

Maignan was one of the few bright spots for AC Milan. His long ball to Gimenez was crucial in setting up the goal, and he made another important save earlier in the game. While he couldn’t do much about Bologna’s goals, his handling of crosses was slightly shaky at times. Overall, a decent performance from the French goalkeeper.

Alex Jimenez (4.5/10)

Jimenez had a night to forget. His defending for Bologna’s winner was nothing short of laughable, as he completely stopped in a crucial moment. He also lost his one-on-one duel with Dominguez earlier in the game and failed to contribute anything meaningful in attack. A very poor display from the young defender.

Malick Thiaw (5/10)

Thiaw had a rough start to the game, with poor positioning and sluggish reactions. While he did recover slightly and made some good interventions, his overall performance was marred by poor giveaways and a lack of composure. This was far from the level we’ve come to expect from him recently.

Milan Pavlovic (5.5/10)

Pavlovic fought hard until the very end and made some positive contributions. However, he lost his man on Bologna’s winner, and while the cross shouldn’t have been allowed in the first place, he needed to do better. Despite being the best defender on the night, he doesn’t get a pass for this performance.

Theo Hernandez (5/10)

Hernandez had an average game by his standards, which unfortunately means it wasn’t very good. His attacking runs were few and far between, and when he did get forward, his crosses failed to find teammates. Defensively, he left too much space open, which Bologna exploited.

Midfield: Lack of Creativity and Control

Youssouf Fofana (5.5/10)

Fofana’s performance was a mixed bag. While he made some good contributions, there were also moments of poor play. Rating Fofana has been tricky in recent months, as he hasn’t been good enough overall. Tonight was no exception, and he failed to make a significant impact.

Tijjani Reijnders (5.5/10)

Reijnders was far too anonymous for large parts of the game. He was responsible for some corners, which could have been taken better, and seemed hesitant to attempt difficult passes. A disappointing display from the Dutch midfielder.

Yunus Musah (5.5/10)

Musah showed good intentions, particularly down the right-hand side, but his final touch let him down. Whether it was the pass to Gimenez in the opening seconds, his wayward crosses, or his shot straight at Skorupski,
the end product was missing. A frustrating night for the American.

Attack: Moments of Brilliance, but Not Enough

Joao Felix (5/10)

Felix occasionally dropped deep to create space, but he wasn’t effective enough on the ball. He failed to bring anything decisive to the table and was largely anonymous in a game where Milan needed him to step up.

Rafael Leao (6/10)

Leao had a tough game against a strong Bologna defence, but he managed to score Milan’s only goal with a composed finish after a great run. While he could have done more, the goal earns him a pass for this performance.

Santiago Gimenez (5.5/10)

Gimenez provided the assist for Leao’s goal, but that was about the only positive in an otherwise disappointing display. He missed a big chance early on and struggled with his touch throughout the game. A frustrating night for the striker.

Substitutes: Limited Impact

Christian Pulisic (5.5/10)

Pulisic came on in a difficult situation and didn’t make much of an impact. He had a few poor giveaways and failed to add any spark to Milan’s attack.
Luka Jovic (6/10)

Jovic was encouraging in his brief cameo, managing to do what Gimenez couldn’t by bringing down the ball and finding a teammate. However, there wasn’t enough time for him to make a real difference.

Tammy Abraham (N/A)

Abraham didn’t see enough action to warrant a rating.

What Went Wrong for AC Milan?

AC Milan’s defeat to Bologna was a culmination of several issues. The defence was disorganised, the midfield lacked creativity, and the attack was largely ineffective. The Rossoneri’s inability to control the game or create clear chances was evident, and their defensive errors proved costly. With this loss, their chances of a top-four finish are all but over.

Looking Ahead: A Tough Road to Recovery

Milan’s focus now shifts to salvaging what they can from the remainder of the season. While the top-four dream may be over, the team must regroup and finish strongly to build momentum for the next campaign. The players and management will need to reflect on this performance and address the glaring issues that have plagued them this season.

AC Milan’s defeat to Bologna was a bitter pill to swallow, and it has all but ended their hopes of a top-four finish. While a few players showed glimpses of quality, the overall performance was far from good enough. The Rossoneri must now look to the future and work on rebuilding their squad and confidence. For now, the focus is on finishing the season with pride and preparing for the challenges ahead.
