Christopher Nkunku celebrates his goal during the UEFA Conference League Play-Offs Second Leg match between Servette FC and Chelsea FC at Stade de Geneve on August 29, 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Servette FC 2-1 Chelsea (2-3 Agg) - Blues Beaten on the Night but Advance in Conference League.

Chelsea narrowly secured their place in the group stage of the UEFA Conference League, advancing with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Swiss side Servette FC on Thursday evening. Despite losing 2-1 on the night at the Stade de Genève, the Blues’ earlier 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge was enough to see them through, albeit with a scare that will leave manager Enzo Maresca with plenty to ponder.

Nkunku’s Penalty Provides Early Comfort

Chelsea arrived in Geneva with a two-goal cushion from the first leg, and it seemed their progression was all but assured when Christopher Nkunku netted a penalty in the 14th minute. The spot-kick came after Mykhailo Mudryk pounced on a defensive error by Servette’s right-back Keigo Tsunemoto, who subsequently fouled the Ukrainian inside the box. Nkunku stepped up confidently, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to put Chelsea 3-0 up on aggregate.

The early goal appeared to put Chelsea in cruise control, and for the first quarter of the match, they looked set to coast into the group stages. Servette, however, had other ideas and began to press Chelsea higher up the pitch, causing discomfort in the visitors' backline.

Servette Strike Back

Despite Chelsea’s dominance in possession, Servette found their way back into the game in the 32nd minute. Dereck Kutesa’s pace on the left flank proved too much for Axel Disasi, as the winger raced past him and delivered a low cross to Jeremy Guillemenot. The Swiss striker made no mistake, slotting the ball past Lucas Jorgensen to level the score on the night and inject new life into the tie.

The goal revitalised Servette and put Chelsea on the back foot. The Blues, who had been in control, now faced a resurgent Servette side that was growing in confidence. The remainder of the first half saw Chelsea struggle to regain their composure, with Noni Madueke missing a golden opportunity to restore their lead just before the break due to a poor first touch.

Chelsea Hold On as Servette Apply Pressure

The second half began with Servette pushing for another goal, sensing that Chelsea were vulnerable. While the visitors managed to regain some control, the threat from Servette was ever-present, and Chelsea’s defence looked increasingly shaky as the match wore on.

In the 72nd minute, Servette capitalised on Chelsea’s frailties. Enzo Crivelli rose above Chelsea’s defenders to head home from a corner, making it 2-1 on the night and reducing the aggregate score to 3-2. The Swiss side needed just one more goal to take the tie into extra time, and suddenly, Chelsea found themselves under siege.

Servette continued to press, and Chelsea’s defence appeared rattled with every attack. The hosts nearly completed the comeback, but their final efforts lacked precision. Meanwhile, Chelsea were unable to find the composure to put the game to bed, with Cole Palmer’s shot in the 83rd minute striking the crossbar in what would have been a match-winning goal.

Chelsea’s Bloated Squad Comes Under Scrutiny

One of the key talking points following the match was the size and composition of Chelsea’s squad. While Maresca has a wealth of talent at his disposal, the sheer volume of players has led to criticism. Chelsea’s transfer dealings have been the subject of much debate, with the club acquiring numerous players in recent windows. However, Maresca’s ability to manage this bloated squad effectively will be crucial if Chelsea are to succeed this season.

Despite the struggles on the night, the depth of Chelsea’s squad was evident. Maresca introduced substitutes like Moises Caicedo, Nicolas Jackson, and Cole Palmer to try and wrest control of the game back in their favour. While their efforts didn’t translate into more goals, the options available to Maresca highlight the potential within the team—if he can find the right balance.

Player of the Match: Christopher Nkunku

Once again, Christopher Nkunku proved to be the difference-maker for Chelsea. His penalty was the deciding goal in the tie, and throughout the match, he was Chelsea’s most dangerous player. Nkunku’s ability to create chances and his composure in front of goal were pivotal, and his performance underscored why he could be a key figure in Maresca’s plans this season.

A Pyrrhic Victory?

Chelsea’s narrow escape in Geneva will raise questions about their ability to compete in the latter stages of the UEFA Conference League. While advancing to the group stage is a positive outcome, the manner in which they nearly squandered a three-goal aggregate lead will be a cause for concern. Maresca and his squad will need to regroup quickly as they await the draw for the league phase, where tougher challenges lie ahead.

For now, Chelsea can breathe a sigh of relief, but the warning signs are clear: there is much work to be done if they are to make a serious run in this competition.
