Horrific Incident in Uttarakhand: Nurse Raped and Murdered, Daily Wage Labourer Arrested.

A tragic incident unfolded in Uttarakhand as a nurse was raped and murdered while returning home from her shift at a private hospital in Nainital. The incident occurred on July 30 in the Udham Singh Nagar district, and after an extensive investigation, a daily wage labourer was arrested for the crime on August 14, according to a report by The Indian Express.

The accused, identified as Dharmendra Kumar from Bareilly, is believed to have followed and attacked the nurse while she was heading home. Her body was discovered in a deserted plot in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district on August 8, eight days after her sister reported her missing. The nurse's family had filed a missing person’s report with the local police on July 31 after she failed to return home the previous night.

According to the police investigation, the accused allegedly dragged the nurse into nearby bushes, where he brutally assaulted and raped her. He then strangled her to death before robbing her of her jewellery and fleeing the scene. Kumar, who is also reported to be a drug addict, had no prior connection to the victim and acted impulsively upon seeing her alone.

Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjunath T C, speaking to The Indian Express, revealed that the accused tried to overpower the woman, but she put up a fierce fight before she was eventually overpowered and murdered. After committing the crime, Kumar took her belongings and fled the area. The police were able to track him down to Rajasthan by following the victim's phone.

This disturbing incident has sent shockwaves across the region, with the healthcare community expressing outrage. Just days earlier, a similar crime occurred in Kolkata, where a junior doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, sparking widespread protests and strikes within the medical fraternity.

The arrest of the accused in Uttarakhand brings some relief to the victim's family, but the case highlights the ongoing concerns over the safety of women, especially those in vulnerable professions. The healthcare community has been particularly vocal in demanding stricter security measures following these back-to-back tragedies.
