PM Modi’s Remarks on Statehood and Early Assembly Polls in Jammu and Kashmir Evoke Mixed Reactions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent announcement regarding the statehood and early assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir has evoked mixed reactions across the political spectrum in the Union Territory. The announcement, aimed at restoring statehood and initiating assembly elections, has sparked both hope and scepticism among political parties and the populace alike. The Supreme Court had already urged the Centre and the Election Commission of India to hold the assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir before September, adding a layer of urgency to the discourse.
Mixed Reactions from Political Parties
The announcement by PM Modi was met with varying responses from different political entities in Jammu and Kashmir. Leaders of several political parties have welcomed the announcement, yet concerns about the lack of a specific timeline have also been voiced. The ambiguity surrounding the exact dates for the assembly elections and the restoration of statehood has left some parties dissatisfied.
National Conference spokesman Imran Nabi Dar acknowledged the positive aspect of PM Modi’s statement but highlighted the lingering uncertainty. “It's good PM has also realised that downgrading of the state into a Union Territory hasn’t been accepted by people. The PM is still not giving an exact date for elections as well as the restoration of statehood, though from day one they (the Centre) have been saying that both assembly elections will be held and statehood restored,” said Dar.
Criticism and Scepticism
On the other hand, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed deep scepticism, dismissing the announcement as another empty promise. Aditya Gupta, PDP youth vice-president, was forthright in his criticism. “For the last 5 years we have been hearing the same jumla. Elections and statehood by #Modi are just like 15 lakh in everyone’s bank account,” Gupta remarked, referencing previous promises made by the PM.
The Congress party also echoed similar sentiments, with spokesman Sheikh Amir emphasising the need for practical actions rather than mere declarations. “The last assembly elections were held in J&K in 2014. If the PM is serious, then they should be more practical and also, as per the directions of the Supreme Court, the ECI should issue election notifications for assembly polls,” Amir asserted. This sentiment underscores the demand for concrete steps towards fulfilling the promises made.
Wave of Hope and Significance
Contrastingly, some political leaders have interpreted the announcement as a beacon of hope. Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari expressed optimism, stating that the Prime Minister’s announcement had brought a wave of hope among the people in J&K. “Prime Minister’s announcement that preparations for the assembly elections have begun and that J&K will get back its statehood is highly significant. People have been eagerly waiting for the fulfilment of the promise for the restoration of statehood to J&K and their democratic right to choose their own representatives,” Bukhari wrote on social networking site X.
Similarly, former J&K chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s party welcomed the PM’s statement. Chief spokesperson of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), Salman Nizami, remarked, “We welcome PM Modi’s statement on conducting elections and restoring statehood in J&K. The recent participation in the Lok Sabha elections indicates that people are eager for change. This has been a long-standing desire and demand of the people. The government must also ensure peace and the smooth conduct of elections to fulfil the aspirations of the citizens.”
The Supreme Court’s Stance
The Supreme Court's directive for the Centre and the Election Commission of India to hold assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir before September adds a significant layer of urgency. The court’s intervention underscores the importance of timely elections and the restoration of democratic processes in the region. The directive aims to address the long-standing demand for representation and governance in Jammu and Kashmir.
PM Modi’s remarks on statehood and early assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir have stirred a mix of reactions, reflecting the diverse political landscape of the region. While some view the announcement with hope and anticipation, others remain sceptical and demand concrete actions. The Supreme Court's directive for timely elections adds further pressure on the Centre and the Election Commission of India to act promptly. As the situation unfolds, the people of Jammu and Kashmir await the fulfilment of promises and the restoration of their democratic rights.
