Axar Patel opened up about his mindset during the knockout stage of a marquee tournament. The Indian spinner revealed that he bowled with the idea of starting and finishing the first and last over really well. Axar was able to implement his ideology as he picked up the wicket of Jonny Bairstow on the very first ball of his over. He went on to pick three wickets and was awarded as the Player of the Match for his all-round effort. India beat England by 68 runs to storm into the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The men in blue ended a decade-long wait as they reached the final of the T20 World Cup.

The ball was turning sharply and staying low, and the Indian spinners exploited the conditions really well. Axar Patel was given his very first over in the powerplay itself and the left-arm spinner managed to deceive England skipper Jos Buttler on the reverse-sweep with his first ball, giving India their most crucial breakthrough. The England team succumbed to spin as Axar found an able partner in Kuldeep Yadav, who also scalped three crucial wickets.

Axar spins magic vs England

Axar Patel gave a sneak peek into his mindset while bowling in a big-ticket match like this. "I think I didn't plan to hit wickets on the first ball. I had a mindset that I have to put it in a good place. Obviously, when you play knockouts, your mindset is that you should start and finish the first and last ball well. That was in my mind. Every time I did well with the wicket, that was a plus point. I think it was difficult to hit big shots, and it was difficult to hit sweep and reverse sweep because if the ball was down on this wicket, you can't connect it so easily," Axar said in the post-match press conference.

Axar Patel also opened up about the all-important wicket of Buttler, who fell against him while playing a reverse-sweep. "Because batsmen have a doubt that if I go to sweep, if the ball is down, I can hit it on the pad. It depends on what line length you put. Mostly our spinners kept it stump to stump. So, it was very difficult to hit sweep shots on this wicket," Axar added.

Axar's performance in this match was nothing short of magical. His ability to turn the ball sharply and maintain a consistent line and length made it extremely challenging for the English batsmen. The conditions were tailor-made for spinners, and Axar capitalised on this to the fullest. His partnership with Kuldeep Yadav ensured that the pressure was constantly on the English batsmen, resulting in frequent wickets and keeping the run rate in check.

India's Journey to the Finals

India's journey to the finals of the T20 World Cup 2024 has been remarkable. The team has displayed exceptional skills, teamwork, and a never-give-up attitude throughout the tournament. The semi-final match against England was a testament to India's strength and depth in both batting and bowling.

Axar Patel's contribution in the semi-final was crucial. Not only did he excel with the ball, but his presence on the field also boosted the morale of the entire team. His all-round performance was instrumental in India's comprehensive victory over England. The 68-run win not only secured a place in the finals but also sent a strong message to their opponents about their intent and capability.

Axar's All-Round Performance

Axar Patel's all-round performance in the semi-final was a masterclass in T20 cricket. With the bat, he provided stability and added valuable runs to the total. His ability to rotate the strike and find boundaries at crucial moments was commendable. With the ball, he was precise and unyielding, making it difficult for the English batsmen to score freely.

Axar's mindset of focusing on starting and finishing his overs well paid off significantly. His strategy of keeping the batsmen guessing and not allowing them to settle made him a formidable opponent. The wicket of Jonny Bairstow on the very first ball of his over set the tone for the rest of the match. This early breakthrough put England on the back foot and gave India the upper hand.

The Impact of Spin on the Game

The semi-final match against England highlighted the importance of spin in T20 cricket. The conditions at the venue were conducive to spin, and the Indian spinners took full advantage of this. Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav were exceptional in their execution, consistently troubling the English batsmen with their variations and accuracy.

The ability to bowl stump to stump and vary the pace effectively was a key factor in India's success. Axar's mindset of making it difficult for the batsmen to play sweep and reverse sweep shots worked perfectly. The pitch conditions complemented his style of bowling, making it a nightmare for the English batsmen to score runs.

Looking Ahead to the Final

With the victory over England, India has now set its sights on the final of the T20 World Cup 2024. The team will face South Africa in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. Axar Patel's form and mindset will be crucial as India aims to lift the coveted trophy.

The final, scheduled for June 29, 2024, will be a true test of skill, strategy, and nerves. Both teams have shown great prowess throughout the tournament, and it will be interesting to see how they fare in the ultimate showdown. Axar Patel's experience and performance in the semi-final will undoubtedly play a significant role in India's approach to the final.

Axar Patel's revelation of his 'knockout mindset' provides a fascinating insight into the thought process of a top-level cricketer during high-pressure situations. His ability to stay focused and execute his plans effectively was a major factor in India's semi-final victory over England. As India prepares for the final against South Africa, fans and cricket enthusiasts alike will be hoping for another stellar performance from Axar Patel, helping India to secure the T20 World Cup 2024 title.
