2026 Assembly Polls: Dates Announced for Bengal, TN, Kerala, Assam & Puducherry.

2026 Assembly Polls: Dates Announced for Bengal, TN, Kerala, Assam & Puducherry.

Election 2026 Date Highlights: Poll Dates Announced for West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam & Puducherry.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) officially announced the schedule for the 2026 Assembly elections in four states—West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam—and the Union Territory of Puducherry on March 15, 2026.
This sets the stage for high-stakes polls as the terms of these assemblies end between May and June 2026.
Key Poll Dates & Schedule:
Kerala, Assam, Puducherry: Single-phase polling on April 9, 2026.

Tamil Nadu: Single-phase polling on April 23, 2026.
West Bengal: Two-phase polling — Phase 1 on April 23, 2026 (152 constituencies), Phase 2 on April 29, 2026 (142 constituencies, covering all 294 seats).
Counting of Votes: Uniformly on May 4, 2026, for all five regions.

The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into immediate effect following the announcement. Nomination filing begins with gazette notifications on March 30 for Phase 1 areas and April 2 for Phase 2 in West Bengal, with last dates for nominations around early April.

These elections involve over 17.4 crore voters across the regions, including significant first-time voters in states like West Bengal (over 5 lakh aged 18-19). The polls will test major political forces: TMC in West Bengal, DMK in Tamil Nadu, LDF in Kerala, BJP-led alliance in Assam, and various parties in Puducherry.
Detailed State-wise Breakdown
West Bengal (294 seats, term ends May 7, 2026): Two phases due to the state's size and logistical needs. Phase 1 covers northern and some central districts; Phase 2 focuses on southern and urban areas. Over 6.45 crore registered voters expected.
Tamil Nadu (234 seats, term ends May 10, 2026): Single-phase voting across all constituencies.

Kerala (140 seats, term ends May 23, 2026): Single-phase, full coverage.

Assam (126 seats, term ends May 20, 2026): Single-phase polling.

Puducherry (30 seats, term ends June 15, 2026): Single-phase as a smaller UT.

The staggered dates in West Bengal allow better security deployment and voter management in a politically charged state.

Controversy Surrounding CEC Gyanesh Kumar

During the press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar dodged questions on an unprecedented opposition move to impeach him. The INDIA bloc (including TMC, Congress, and others) submitted notices in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha seeking his removal, alleging partisan conduct and bias toward the ruling BJP.
Key accusations include discriminatory handling during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, particularly in West Bengal, where critics claim it targeted minorities and aimed to disenfranchise voters to benefit the BJP. The process for removing a CEC mirrors that of a Supreme Court judge—requiring proven misbehaviour or incapacity via parliamentary impeachment.

Kumar refused to comment, focusing solely on the poll schedule. This marks the first time a CEC faces such a formal motion, highlighting deep distrust in the poll body's neutrality amid ongoing electoral roll controversies.

West Bengal Voter List Controversy

A major flashpoint is the ongoing SIR in West Bengal, which has led to massive deletions—over 61 lakh names removed, with another ~60 lakh under adjudication by judicial officers (per Supreme Court directives). Opposition parties, including Congress and TMC, allege the exercise disproportionately affects Muslim-majority border districts and valid voters.

West Bengal Congress President Suvankar Sarkar reacted sharply to the announcement: "Whether it's one phase or two, the Congress's only stance is that the names of valid voters should not be removed from the voter list... Our sole demand is that the 6 million names under consideration before April 23 should be clarified... How can it be a festival [of democracy] if valid voters like me are missing from the rolls?"

The ECI maintains the SIR ensures clean rolls, but critics call it politically motivated. Adjudication continues, with supplementary lists expected before polling. TMC has questioned the two-phase polling in Bengal while others get single-phase, alleging favoritism.
Broader Context & Implications

These 2026 polls are crucial mid-cycle tests before the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Key battles:
West Bengal: TMC's Mamata Banerjee seeks a third term against BJP's aggressive push.
Tamil Nadu: DMK's MK Stalin defends against AIADMK-BJP alliance revival.

Kerala: LDF (CPI(M)) under Pinarayi Vijayan faces UDF (Congress-led) challenge.

Assam: BJP's Himanta Biswa Sarma aims for continuity amid opposition unity.

Puducherry: A mix of alliances in the small but symbolically important UT.

The announcement kicks off intense campaigning, security preparations, and legal battles over voter lists. With MCC in force, no major announcements or sops allowed until results.

This democratic exercise will shape India's political landscape heading into the latter half of the decade—watch for high drama in Bengal's phased battles and voter inclusion debates.
