Álvarez & De Paul Down Lautaro’s Inter: Atlético 2-1 in Argentine UCL Classic.

Atlético Madrid 2-1 Inter: Argentine Fireworks Light Up the Metropolitano as Julián Álvarez Downs the Nerazzurri.

MADRID – In a Champions League night dripping with sky-blue-and-white passion, Atlético de Madrid defeated reigning Serie A champions Inter 2-1 in a pulsating Matchday 5 clash that felt more like a Buenos Aires clásico than a European midweek fixture.
Julián Álvarez and Rodrigo De Paul struck for the Colchoneros, while Lautaro Martínez pulled one back for Inter in a game that featured no fewer than seven Argentines on the pitch – and one very famous Argentine screaming from the touchline.

In front of 68,731 roaring rojiblancos at the Metropolitano, Diego Pablo Simeone outwitted his compatriot Simone Inzaghi in a tactical chess match that saw Atlético climb to 10th in the league phase (10 points) and keep their hopes of a top-8 finish alive, while Inter dropped to 15th and now face a nervous final three games to avoid the play-off roulette.

The Argentine Derby the World Didn’t Know It Needed

Starting XI – Argentines in bold Atlético Madrid (3-5-2): Musso – Molina, Witsel, Giménez, Lino – Llorente, Koke (c), De Paul, Riquelme – Álvarez, Griezmann Subs used: Giuliano Simeone (71’), Nicolás González (82’)

Inter (3-5-2): Sommer – Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni – Dumfries, Barella, Çalhanoğlu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco – Thuram, Lautaro Martínez (c) Subs used: Frattesi (62’), Taremi (74’)

From the first whistle, the Metropolitano chanted one name louder than any other: “¡Ju-li-án! ¡Ju-li-án!”. The former River Plate and Manchester City striker repaid the love in just the 11th minute.

11’ – Julián Álvarez Breaks the Deadlock (1-0)

A seemingly innocuous throw-in on the left was flicked on by Griezmann. The ball ricocheted in the box off Acerbi’s shin, looped high, and dropped perfectly for Álvarez between Bastoni and Pavard. The Spider took one touch with his chest, a second with his right foot, and volleyed past Sommer before the Swiss keeper had even moved. 1-0.

The linesman’s flag went up for a possible handball by De Paul in the build-up. The stadium held its breath. Four minutes of VAR later, Turkish referee Halil Umut Meler confirmed: the ball had struck De Paul’s thigh, not his arm. Goal stands.

Álvarez sprinted to the corner flag, kissed the crest, and pointed both thumbs to his chest – the classic Argentine “Acá estoy yo”. Somewhere in the stands, his father Gustavo jumped so high he nearly landed in the press box.

38’ – Rodrigo De Paul Doubles the Lead (2-0)

If the first goal was instinct, the second was pure Argentine garra.

Inter were pushing for an equaliser when Çalhanoğlu’s corner was headed clear by José María Giménez – another Albiceleste warrior. The ball fell to De Paul 30 yards out. One touch to set, and the World Cup winner unleashed an absolute Exocet with his weaker left foot that flew into the top corner like a guided missile. Sommer didn’t even bother diving.

De Paul slid on his knees toward the Fondo Sur, beating his chest and screaming “¡Vamos carajo!”. Cholo Simeone charged down the touchline like he’d just won the lottery. The Metropolitano decibel level hit 129 dB – officially the loudest roar recorded this season.

57’ – Lautaro Martínez Pulls One Back (2-1)

Inter weren’t done. A quick free-kick caught Atlético napping. Dimarco’s cross found Lautaro arriving late at the back post. The Inter captain – wearing the armband with pride in the city where his idol Diego Milito once reigned – rose above Giménez and powered a header past Musso.

Lautaro ran to the away end cupping his ears. For a moment, the 3,000 Nerazzurri fans dared to dream.

The Final Half-Hour: Pure Metropolitano Madness

From that point it was vintage Atlético. Ten men behind the ball. Every clearance a war cry. Every tackle a declaration of love.

71’ – Giuliano Simeone (yes, Cholo’s 21-year-old son) replaces Griezmann and nearly scores with his first touch.

82’ – Nicolás González enters to a standing ovation and immediately wins three duels in a row.

89’ – Lautaro has a goal ruled out for a fractional offside.

90+3’ – Musso produces a world-class one-handed save from Taremi’s volley.
90+6’ – Final whistle. The Metropolitano explodes.
