Dark Skies and Bitter Cold Grip Delhi: Hailstorm Alert for North India.

Delhi woke up to dark skies and a biting chill on Friday after heavy rainfall lashed the city and neighboring areas. The unexpected deluge, brought by a Western Disturbance, disrupted daily life, caused waterlogging in several low-lying areas, and left commuters battling traffic snarls. Accompanying this rain, a significant dip in temperature added to the winter’s bite, marking an abrupt shift in weather conditions.

Rain and a Sharp Temperature Drop

The capital experienced moderate to heavy rain starting early Friday morning, which continued intermittently throughout the day. The rain led to a steep drop in temperatures, with the maximum recorded at 15 degrees Celsius—a sharp decline of nearly 10 degrees from the previous day. The difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures was minimal, at just 3 degrees Celsius, leaving the city enveloped in a persistent chill.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an 'orange' warning for Delhi, highlighting the possibility of intense rain and hailstorms in some areas. For Saturday and Sunday, a slightly less severe 'yellow' alert has been declared. The IMD emphasized that these conditions are the result of a Western Disturbance interacting with easterly winds, which have also triggered similar weather patterns across other parts of North India.

Regional Impacts Across North India

The rain and associated disturbances extended beyond Delhi, affecting a significant part of North India. The IMD predicts heavy rainfall over regions such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, and West Madhya Pradesh. Thunderstorms, accompanied by hailstorms, are likely to strike Southeast Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, East Rajasthan, and even areas further south such as Vidarbha and parts of Gujarat.

In Himachal Pradesh, snowfall and thunderstorms are expected to dominate the weather over the next few days, particularly in higher altitudes. The IMD has forecasted a cold wave starting Sunday, potentially disrupting daily life in this already frigid region. Similarly, Uttarakhand braces for heavy rainfall and snowfall over the weekend, with authorities urging residents to prepare for possible road closures and power outages in hilly areas.

Hailstorm Warnings and Urban Disruptions

The hailstorm warning in Delhi and neighboring areas poses a concern for infrastructure and agriculture. Hailstorms, often associated with localized strong winds, can damage crops and disrupt transportation. On Friday, waterlogging was reported across South, Central, and North Delhi, adding to commuter woes. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Delhi University's North Campus, which also bore the brunt of waterlogging.

Traffic disruptions were rampant, with vehicles moving at a snail’s pace on key arterial roads. Emergency services and civic authorities were on high alert, working to clear waterlogged streets and manage snarls caused by stalled vehicles.

Cold Wave Grips Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, cold conditions have persisted, with light to moderate rain reported in several areas. Churu recorded the state’s lowest temperature at 5.4 degrees Celsius, underscoring the severity of the winter chill. Night temperatures showed slight variability, ranging from 5.4 degrees Celsius in Churu to 17.2 degrees Celsius in Vanasthali.

This sudden change in weather has raised concerns among the state’s rural population, particularly farmers. The rain, coupled with the cold wave, could damage standing crops, including wheat and mustard, which are highly sensitive to waterlogging and frost.

A Broader Perspective: Winter in India

The ongoing rain and hailstorm alerts signal the influence of strong Western Disturbances, which are common during India’s winter season. These disturbances, when interacting with moisture-laden easterly winds, often result in widespread rainfall and snowfall in the northern plains and Himalayan regions. The resultant cold waves can make winters harsher, particularly in states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab.

According to meteorologists, this weather system is likely to linger for the next few days, with rain and thunderstorms expected to taper off by the beginning of the following week. However, the aftermath of the sudden weather shift—especially the cold wave—will likely persist longer.

Precautionary Measures and Public Advisory

With heavy rain, hailstorms, and a cold wave on the horizon, authorities have urged citizens to take precautions. The IMD has advised people in hailstorm-prone areas to avoid venturing outdoors during peak hours of activity. Farmers in northern states have been cautioned to cover their crops and livestock to minimize potential damage.

Residents of urban areas like Delhi have been encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and be vigilant against waterlogging and traffic disruptions. For those living in the Himalayan region, preparations to combat snow accumulation and freezing temperatures are paramount.

Environmental and Health Implications

The sudden drop in temperature and persistent cold pose health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with preexisting health conditions. The IMD has recommended wearing appropriate clothing and avoiding prolonged exposure to the cold.

Additionally, the rain may temporarily improve Delhi's air quality, which frequently ranks among the worst globally. The cleansing effect of rain can help settle particulate matter, offering some respite to residents. However, this improvement may be short-lived as colder temperatures and high humidity can trap pollutants closer to the ground, causing smog.

The heavy rains and sharp dip in temperatures in Delhi and across North India underscore the power and unpredictability of winter weather patterns in the region. As the city grapples with disruptions, hailstorm alerts and cold wave warnings paint a picture of a challenging weekend ahead. Authorities remain on high alert, and residents are advised to stay informed and prepared for continued adverse weather.

This episode serves as a stark reminder of the importance of robust weather forecasting and community resilience in the face of nature’s extremes. Whether it’s preparing for the next rainstorm or bracing against the winter chill, the people of Delhi and North India stand resilient, navigating through the unpredictability of the season.
